A user reported OpenDecider Focus downloading the model again on every visit. loadFile swallowed a failed cache.put, so when the Cache API refused a model file nothing said so and the next load downloaded it again.

It reproduces in Chromium 141: on a fresh profile, a page's cache.put of an in-memory body of 566 MiB or more (q8, fp16) rejects with UnknownError: Unexpected internal error, while 500 MiB and below are kept.

@opendecider/web

  • Reads the Cache API, then the origin private file system (folder opendecider-web-v1, one file per SHA-256), then downloads. Every copy is checked against its pinned size and SHA-256; a damaged one is deleted from where it came from.
  • Keeps a download in the Cache API, else in the private file system (createWritable, committed on close, aborted on error; skipped where createWritable is missing). If neither keeps it, the bytes are still returned.
  • LoadProgress.stored (optional, additive): "cache", "opfs" or false on the last event of a downloaded file.
  • After loadNano has built a model, files of builds this version doesn't pin are deleted from both stores, in the background and never failing the load. Every pinned build is kept. Not with cache: false or files.

OpenDecider Focus

  • Passes stored to the model state; when it is false the popup says the model will download again next time.
  • No new permission, network request, CSP or manifest change. The privacy policy now mentions the private file system and the clean-up of old builds.

Tests

  • web vitest 43/43 (10 new: the fallback, both stores failing, damaged copies, cache: false, pruning).
  • extension vitest 23/23.
  • Typecheck, Prettier and builds pass for both.
  • Extension e2e passes with and without the GPU; it now also checks the model was kept.
  • In real Chromium with every cache.put refused: two downloads, then a reload with zero. Unpatched Chromium refused the q8 model by itself and the file was kept in the private file system: again zero downloads on reload.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Model downloads can fall back to private browser storage when the browser cache refuses them. Stored files are verified before reuse, and files from older model builds are removed after a successful load.
    • Download status indicates whether a file was stored in the browser cache, private storage, or neither. When Chrome cannot retain a model, the extension displays a notice that it will be downloaded again next time.
    • Disabling caching prevents files from being stored or removed.
  • Documentation
    • Updated browser and extension guides to describe storage options, download status, cleanup behavior, and differences in file retention across Node, Bun, and Deno.

A failed cache.put was swallowed, so a browser whose Cache API refused a
model file downloaded it again on every load, without a word. Chromium 141 can
refuse it: on a fresh profile, a page's cache.put of an in-memory body of
566 MiB or more (q8, fp16) rejected with "UnknownError: Unexpected
internal error", while 500 MiB was kept.

- loadFile reads the Cache API, then the origin private file system
(folder opendecider-web-v1, a file per SHA-256), then downloads. Every
copy is checked against its pinned size and SHA-256; a damaged one is
deleted from where it came from. A copy from either reports cached: true.
- A download is kept in the Cache API, else in the private file system
(createWritable, committed on close and aborted on an error, so a failed
write never leaves part of a file; skipped where createWritable is
missing). When neither keeps it, the bytes are still returned.
- LoadProgress gains an optional `stored` ("cache", "opfs" or false) on
the last event of a downloaded file, after the save. Other events are
  unchanged.
- Once loadNano has built a model, files of builds this version does not
pin are deleted from both stores, in the background and never failing
the load. Every pinned build is kept; only our own SHA-256-named entries
are touched. Not with cache: false or files.
- OpenDecider Focus passes `stored` from the offscreen page to the model
state; when it is false the popup says the model will download again
next time. No new permission, request or CSP change.

📝 Walkthrough

The web loader stores downloaded model files in the Cache API or OPFS, reports where files were stored, and prunes unpinned files after model loading. The extension passes storage status to the popup, which reports when Chrome did not retain the model.

Changes: Model storage and retention status

Layer / File(s) Summary
Cache API and OPFS storage
web/src/hub.ts, web/test/hub.test.ts, docs/guides/browser.md, web/README.md, CHANGELOG.md
The loader checks stored files against their pinned SHA-256 and tries the Cache API before OPFS. Download progress reports whether a file was stored. Tests cover fallback, reuse, invalid copies, and disabled caching.
Pruning after model load
web/src/nano.ts, web/test/cancel.test.ts
After session creation, loadNano starts pruning when caching is enabled and no custom files loader is supplied. Pruning keeps the tokenizer and model hashes pinned by this version. Tests cover the conditions and pruning failures.
Extension storage status
extension/src/offscreen.ts, extension/src/background.ts, extension/src/popup.ts, extension/e2e/run.mjs, docs/guides/chrome-extension.md, docs/chrome-extension-privacy.md
The extension passes the storage result through its model status. The popup reports when the model was not retained. The end-to-end test checks for Cache API or OPFS storage.

Deno from runtimes without the Cache API: explain that Deno’s persistent Cache

lacking that API download them again on each start.
